Melting Glaciers, Artificial Lake Pose Threat to Badrinath, Joshimath, Karnaprayag

Dehradun, July 12, 2013: A lake formed after the melting of glaciers at Satopanth in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand poses a fresh threat to the rain-ravaged areas of Badrinath, Joshimath and Karnaprayag.

Meanwhile, rains continued in the State, triggering a landslip that killed six persons in Nainital district on Thursday.

The lake, formed 30 km from Badrinath, can pose a threat to the adjoining areas, including the shrine, Joshimath and Karnaprayag, Chamoli District Magistrate S.A. Murugesan said.

“We have issued an alert as instructed by the Disaster Management and Mitigation Department.”

A team of the Army and the Indo-Tibetan Border Police did an aerial survey of the lake and found no reason for immediate alarm, he said.
