Chittagong Hindus Celebrate Rath Yatra with a Mammoth Procession

JULY 11, 2013: Tens of thousands of Hindu devotees yesterday celebrated the Rathjatra (chariot festival) in Chittagong city with a mammoth procession carrying the deities of Lord Jagannath.
Hindus celebrate the festival every year to commemorate the annual visit of Lord Jagannath to Gundicha temple.
With colourful banners, festoons, male and female devotees in traditional dresses assembled at Prabartak Sangha intersection from different corners of the city. Students of universities, schools and colleges also joined the procession with their own banners.
At 3:00pm, the procession was brought out with decorated chariots. After parading the important thoroughfares of the city, it ended on the DC Hill premises.
Chittagong city Mayor M Manjur Alam earlier inaugurated the festival.
