Security Beefed Up in Bylakuppe Tibetan Settlements

Mysore, July 8, 2013: The police establishment went into an overdrive and almost doubled the deployment of security personnel at the Tibetan settlements in Bylakuppe in Mysore district, where Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama is camping, following the terror strikes in Bodh Gaya, Bihar on Sunday. Incidentally, the Tibetan spiritual leader celebrated his 78th birthday on Saturday.

Five teams of the Anti-Sabotage Cell (ASC) have been scouring over the places to sweep them off any explosive substances.

The Bodh Gaya blasts spurred the entire police top brass into holding a series of meetings to review the security arrangements. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) too sent a security advisory seeking stepping up of security at Bylakuppe, about 75 km from Mysore city.

A huge congregation of Tibetans and Tibetan Buddhist monks from various parts of the country have assembled at Bylakuppe to attend the birthday celebrations of the Dalai Lama.

“The police are on high alert and have stepped up security checks at Bylakuppe. The police personnel are instructed to maintain tight vigil across the settlements,” said Inspector-General of Police (Southern range) Ramachandra Rao told The Hindu. Mr. Rao asked visitors to cooperate with the security forces in view of the intense security checks that would be carried out as a precautionary measure.
