39 Assamese Pilgrims Missing in Uttarkhand

GUWAHATI: At least 39 pilgrims from Assam were in different parts of Uttarakhand when flood ravaged the state and the whereabouts of only nine of them are known so far.

The state government on Thursday sent Finance Commissioner and Secretary Rajiv C Joshi to Uttarakhand, to liaise with the government there regarding the status of the pilgrims of the state, who are stranded there because of the flash floods. Sudhakar Singh of Assam Police's special branch (Z), who has been appointed as the nodal officer to monitor the situation in Uttarakhand, said, "We have received calls from several families and have got names of 39 people, who are in Uttarakhand. The Uttarakhand government has informed us that it has located nine pilgrims from the state at Yamunotri and they have been put up at a lodge there."

The Uttarakhand government also added that they will inform us immediately on locating other pilgrims from the state and the nine people from the state will be able to return to Assam as soon as road communication is restored in a day or two.
